A clump-forming grass that is found on stream banks, edges of swamps, and hillsides with its tall flower plumes appearing between September and October.
Toi toi’s ability to grow in a range of conditions means it is a very versatile revegetation plant – its tolerance of strong winds makes it good for shelter and it can also be planted to help retain steep banks. Happy in damp conditions Toi toi is also a good addition to wetland plantings. Its flamboyant form makes it a common sight in landscaping projects.
