Planting Natives at Huramua Marae

In July 2020 the Huramua Marae community near Wairoa in New Zealand planted nearly 500 native trees to honour the district’s returned service personnel and to create a special place for future generations. Minginui Nursery is proud to have supplied native trees for this project. For Tanemitirangi Huramua Marae, the planting of native trees is a way to celebrate and protect their tūpuna.

As the Wairoa River widens, Mātiti Urupā, the burial site of their ancestors has become threatened. By planting trees, they can retire the land and provide a living memorial to the Service Personnel of the Huramua Rohe to be enjoyed for generations to come.

Funding is available for those wanting to get involved with Matariki Tu Rākau. For more information, get in contact with the team at MatarikiTuRakau@mpi.govt.nz or visit the website: https://www.teururakau.govt.nz/funding-and-programmes/forestry/one-billion-trees-programme/matariki-tu-raka
